My girls love to play outside, but when the weather changes, I’m very hesitant to let them stay out past the first sprinkle of rain since we have an abundance of sand around our home. Once that rain hits the ground and the sand becomes mud, all I can think about is the clothes they’ll ruin, the mud they’ll track in and the baths they’ll need. Clara’s always wanting to splash in puddles and continue “nature tracking” (Dinosaur Train fans, anyone?) so I needed to find them some appropriate gear to help them stay dry and warm while encouraging them to enjoy the outdoors, rain or shine!
Oakiwear, a company with a mission of outfitting kids with quality, affordable gear for the outdoors, sent them each a product for my review. And on the first rainy day after the package arrived, Clara could not wait to get her rain gear on and head outside to collect acorns and search for worms, or whatever it is those “nature trackers” do…
Delly received the Children’s Dry Tyke One-Piece Rain Suit in yellow. She’s 17 months old and big for her age (2T in regular clothing), but still only needed a 12 month size suit. I am very impressed with all of the adjustable features of the suit that allow you to get the best fit for your child. When I first put it on her, the suit was a bit long in the arms and legs and baggy in the waist (which is great for times when more layers are needed) but after I cinched the drawstring waist and adjusted the wrist and ankle straps, she was very comfortable and was able to run around without tripping on her pants or sleeves coming over her hands. The attached hood is another well-designed feature. It forms to her head and stays in place, unlike other hoods we’ve had that fall off as soon as the child starts moving. Lastly, the nylon material is light but very durable. There were many times when Delly has been sliding down stairs or around on the ground and I feared her tearing the suit, but this is a tough suit that I know will last to be passed down to another child.
Clara received the Children’s Dry Tyke Rain Jacket in Purple and a pair of the matching black Dry Tyke Rain Pants. I ordered the set in size 3T for her and they both fit well, especially when the sleeves and ankle straps are adjusted. Like Delly’s suit, the jacket and pants are lightweight but durable and the hood is comfortable but secure fit. And I especially love that the items can be used separately. She’s worn the jacket alone several times when we’re out and about on a rainy day.
One of my favorite features of the Rain Pants is the Neoprene Waist, which features no buttons or snaps, just a soft and comfortable material that is easy for Clara to get into it.
The cuffs at the bottom of these pants are also neoprene like those on both the jacket and on Delly’s Rain Suit. At the moment, she needs them tightened for the best fit, but as she grows we will loosen them so she’s able to wear them as long as possible. I love adjustable clothing that will last!
